Getting the Right Set of Wheels for Your Scooter

Read time: 2 min

Mobility scooters are a huge benefit for those with limited mobility. They can be a significant investment, much like buying a car, so it’s important to get the choice right, including selecting the best tyres for your needs.

As you head out this spring, a mobility scooter can open up new possibilities. Whether you’re considering a traditional model or a foldable boot scooter, tyre choice is a key decision that’s often overlooked.

Most mobility scooters come with two main tyre options: pneumatic (air-filled) or solid tyres. Each has its own advantages and drawbacks, particularly when it comes to comfort and maintenance.

Pneumatic Tyres

Pneumatic tyres, also known as air-filled tyres, offer several advantages over solid alternatives. Most notably, they provide superior comfort (especially on uneven terrain) by absorbing shocks more effectively. They also tend to deliver better grip on pavements, improving traction and overall control.

However, these benefits come with some downsides. Pneumatic tyres require regular maintenance and carry a risk of punctures. Like car tyres, they need consistent pressure checks to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Ideally this need to be done on a weekly basis.

Punctures are another consideration. These can range from minor wear-and-tear damage to more serious issues that could leave you stranded while out and about.

Solid Tyres

Solid tyres are a durable and low-maintenance alternative. Made from solid materials rather than filled with air, they are completely puncture-proof and generally last longer than pneumatic tyres. This reliability eliminates the risk of unexpected breakdowns due to punctures.

However, their durability comes at the expense of comfort. Solid tyres are less effective at absorbing shocks, which can result in a firmer, less comfortable ride. This is particularly true on rough or uneven surfaces.

What’s best for you?

If you mainly travel on smooth pavements and want a maintenance-free option, solid tyres may be ideal. However, if you frequently encounter uneven terrain, gravel paths, or longer journeys, pneumatic tyres can provide a much more comfortable and controlled ride.
