Hanningfield Reservoir is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, recognised for the rare birds that nest in the area. The resevoir delivers water to much of the South Essex region.

Hanningfield Waterside Park and the wider reservoir are a fantastic option for those with limited mobility, especially for those looking for lunch.
The nature trails are largely accessible; however, the terrain is uneven. Visitors should plan and check weather conditions ahead of time before visiting.
The onsite fishing lodge has a wide variety of fishing supplies available. Giftware and nature supplies are stocked at the Cafe on the Water and Wildlife Trust Centre.
The Cafe on the Water is fully wheelchair accessible, serving both a breakfast and lunch menu. The Wildlife Trust Centre is also open for coffees and light bites.
Aside from the catering and fishing options, there is a beautiful nature trail connecting the Waterside Park to the Wildlife Trust Reserve. The Wind in the Willows trail begins at the reserve.
There are birdwatching and nature hides along the trail with great views of the water.
The Waterside Park has a children’s play area.
The park is not directly accessible via public transport links. The site is best accessed by car.
Both bank fishing and boat fishing are available with day or half-day tickets. Please call ahead to enquire about wheelchair-accessible boats. While the reservoir is home to a variety of fish species, only trout may be taken from the site.
