It’s getting to that time of year when we all start planning for the Christmas holidays (if you haven’t already). For those with elderly family members or loved ones dealing with serious medical conditions, it’s vital to factor in their needs, especially if they have physical requirements your home does not yet meet.
In the build-up to Christmas, we never forget to buy gifts, plan games, arrange visits, or stock up on mountains of food (although we sometimes willfully forget the sprouts). However, one key consideration often overlooked is making our homes safe and suitable for guests with physical restrictions. That’s why we have assembled a quick access guide/catalogue to ensure your loved ones can be home for Christmas!
Furniture Hire
Hospitals may not discharge patients, even for temporary visits over Christmas, unless the proper equipment or furniture is in place.
Riser Recliners
Tilt-in-Space Riser Recliners may look like exceptionally comfortable armchairs, but they also provide significant physical benefits, including improved posture, easier transfers, and better pressure distribution when sitting.
High Back Chairs
The ideal choice for those recovering from hip or knee replacements. High back chairs keep the body at an appropriate angle to avoid aggravating newly operated joints and provide excellent postural support.
Care Beds
For largely bed-bound patients who will spend much of the Christmas season resting, having the correct bed is crucial. Care beds are designed to offer maximum support, improve circulation, and reduce the risk of pressure sores. Mattresses are available for sale separately.
Toiletries
One of the biggest barriers to comfortable living, especially for elderly guests, is safe, dignified access to the toilet. To reduce risk this Christmas and ensure your home is appropriately set up, several options are available:
- Raised Toilet Seats
- Designed for those with restricted ability to bend or stretch, raised toilet seats reduce strain and make it easier to manage low toilets.
- Toilet Surround Frames
- A sturdy aid that provides additional support when bending or standing. No installation is required: simply position the frame around the toilet.
- Commodes
- If using a regular toilet remains unsafe, commodes offer a practical and dignified alternative for those with very limited mobility. Commode pots are available for purchase separately.
Please note: For sanitary reasons, some toiletry items cannot be hired. Feel free to contact us with any queries.
Mobility Assistance
For short-term mobility support, hiring a wheelchair for one to two weeks is an excellent option over Christmas. It allows easier navigation of the home, and for those whose condition permits, it enables participation in festive outings. Wheelchair cushions are also available for added comfort. We offer both attendant wheelchairs and, for those with the upper body strength + independence to navigate themselves, self-propelled hire options.
Additional Aids to Consider
We understand that you may not want to make permanent alterations to your home – and you don’t have to! Several temporary solutions can significantly improve mobility for your guests. For example, suction grab rails are perfect for both tile and glass surfaces. They can be positioned and locked in place with ease, and removal is just as simple. Also, shower perching stools can easily be popped into a bathroom or shower unit. A great option for those who need a little extra assurance when in the shower for long periods.
Extra Advice
If you’re unsure what you will need this Christmas, speak with the relevant medical professional at the hospital or medical centre your family member or friend is attending. Ask what requirements need to be in place and whether they can provide guidance or support. Our team is always happy to advise as well.
We also offer free consultations. Get in touch, and we can walk you through what may be needed to prepare your home.
