Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker

A unique reminder of the dangers of the Cold War and what a political nuclear bunker of the time looked like.

A fascinating look at a formerly secret nuclear bunker that is now fully open and accessible to the public as a museum. Visitors can expect a unique look at an authentic piece of history from the Cold War era. An digital audio guide is included in the price of admission. Photo by Scott Wylie.

Mobility Summary

Due to being constructed for the purpose of being a functional nuclear bunker, there are limitations for wheelchair users. The team have done what they can to accommodate disabled visitors; however, limitations remain.

Visitors will have to use a separate entrance through the canteen, accessible via the staff car park. The middle floor of the bunker is then accessible for those able to transfer to a stairlift.

Things to do:

Every ticket includes a self-guided audio tour handset. Visitors can see authentic Cold War artefacts, comms equipment, a command centre and more. There is a dress-up area for children.

The Bunker has a small canteen serving hot drinks, cakes, snacks, and sandwiches.

Kelvedon Hatch Secret Bunker is best accessed via car using the A12 and onto Ongar Road to Kalvedon Hatch or the no.21 bus from Brentwood.

At the end of the tour, there is a gift shop with related souvenirs.
