Rollators and wheeled walkers are fantastic for providing the stability and assurance required to get you out with confidence. We’ve compiled a few things you should bear in mind when trying to get out of the house.
General Stability
For a rollator to be wholly effective and stable, it needs to be at least 55cm wide. This is important to bear in mind, as some trolleys on the market may look like a walking aid, but they are not fit for the job. All rollators and walkers offered by us do meet the required stability standards.
Seats
Rollator seats are ideal perching spots when out and about. When in need of a quick rest, you can simply apply the locking brakes, which safely secure the rollator in place. Three-wheel walkers, due to their smaller overall footprint, are equipped with smaller seats. This might not be a problem depending on the user’s size, but it is always worth bearing in mind. As such, four-wheel walkers often provide a better seating solution for temporary rest stops.
Folding and Handling
For effective storage, the majority of rollators are designed to fold quickly and easily. This makes them ideal for use at home, when travelling, or when transporting them in a car. Many models also feature simple one-handed folding mechanisms, allowing for convenient handling without unnecessary effort.
Weight
The vast majority of rollators are designed to be lightweight enough to handle and transport with ease. For example, they should be manageable to lift into the boot of a car. Three-wheel walkers are often the lightest variety of rollator, making them particularly suitable for those seeking a more manoeuvrable option.
Extra Features to Look For
- Locking Mechanisms
For easy and safe handling, many walkers come with a locking system that prevents the rollator from unfolding unexpectedly while being carried or stored. - Brake Adjustment
Rollators such as the Zoom Enduro are excellent examples of adjustable braking systems. They are designed with adjustable safety drag settings, making them particularly suitable for individuals with conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, where additional control and stability may be required. - Storage Options
Many rollators include practical accessories such as shopping bags, baskets, or trays, helping users carry personal belongings or groceries comfortably while on the move. - Wheel Size
Larger wheels are generally better suited for outdoor use, as they cope more effectively with uneven pavements and rougher terrain, while smaller wheels can offer greater manoeuvrability indoors. - Handle Height Adjustment
Adjustable handles allow the rollator to be tailored to the user’s height, promoting better posture and reducing strain on the wrists and shoulders during use.
