Rayleigh Mount & Windmill

A picturesque spot in the middle of Rayleigh Town Centre.

Rayleigh Mount is now a picturesque location in the middle of Rayleigh town centre. It was once the site of an early medieval wooden motte and bailey castle. The mount is now a patch of nature, a pleasant walk and a picnic spot.

Mobility Summary

The majority of the site is step-free, with alternative routes for wheelchairs, powerchairs and mobility scooters. Steeper areas around the old castle motte itself may be a concern for those with very limited stability/mobility.

There are only steps to the very top. Unfortunately, the windmill is only accessible from the ground floor for wheelchair users.

Things to do:

A pleasant spot to sit and explore, the remnants of the motte and bailey castle. Rayleigh High Street and the windmill are also within a stone’s throw of the site.

The museum inside Rayleigh Windmill provides information on the history of Rayleigh and the mount.

Rayleigh Mount is a steep walk from Rayleigh train station. Buses 3/20/25/63/X30 run through the Station Bus Stop and/or High Street bus stops. The Mount is just 100-200 yards from Rayleigh High Street.
